Core Stability

What is core stability and why is it important?

Core Stability has become the fashionable term of recent times but unfortunately many people aiming to be training and strengthening the 'core stabilisers' of the trunk do not have the knowledge or expertise to do so and as a result are often creating more trunk muscle imbalance than strength! Contrary to what some will tell you, having a 'wash-board' stomach does not guarantee you good core stability.

Physiotherapists have been training their patients in correct core stabilising or strengthening techniques for many years. In fact, the recent explosion in public interest in core stabilising techniques has come about due directly to ground breaking research done by Australian physiotherapists at the university of Queensland. Their research showed a direct link between the function of the deep abdominal muscles and people with low back pain.

The abdominal muscles are divided into three separate layers and it is only the deepest of these layers- the transversis abdominus which is responsible for stabilising our spine. Exercises to strengthen your 'core' need to be technique perfect to be effective and once learnt can be done regularly anywhere! Core stability exercises are not abdo crunches or sit ups! Core stability is an important part of recovery from back pain but is also important for injury prevention and overall performance for sports people.
